What is electrolysis? A safe and effective method for permanent hair removal, regardless of skin tone and the cause—whether your unwanted hair is genetic, metabolic, or the result of hormonal changes. It is also the only hair removal method approved by the FDA and the only alternative to lifetime maintenance.

How long has electrolysis technology existed? How has it changed?

Electrolysis technology dates to 1875. Since then, the technology and process have developed significantly and continue to advance every year. For starters, the process is exponentially faster. Modern electrolysis technology enables increased speed of the epilator shorter time spent in the follicle. We are also able to adjust the intensity settings to the right proportions for your treatment. Beyond the technology itself, electrologists are also much more knowledgeable in the area of skin care. As a society, dermal science and research have progressed greatly so electrolysis treatment only gets safer, more comfortable and more effective with each year. Does electrolysis work—is it really permanent?

Yes! During electrolysis treatment, we prevent regrowth as opposed to simply removing your hair temporarily. Electrolysis can achieve this because it is the only hair removal method that not only removes the hair but also destroys the growth cells of the hair follicle. This process prevents treated hairs from ever growing back.

How specifically does electrolysis work?

Electrolysis entails transmitting a small electric current through a fine, sterile needle (or probe) into the natural opening of the hair follicle. This process destroys the dermal papilla, the matrix and an area called “the bulge,” all of which cause hair to grow and regenerate.

Can electrolysis help me?

Absolutely! Electrolysis works for all types of skin and hair and hair and skin colors. We can apply treatment to most facial and body parts such as eyebrows, chin, upper and lower lip, jaw line, sides of the face, breasts, underarms, abdomen, bikini line, fingers and toes, legs and back. During your initial conversation at Elliemay’s, we will determine a treatment plan that is best for your hair removal needs. See our Solutions page for more info »

Can electrolysis remove hairs from moles?

In most cases, yes. We can use electrolysis to remove hair from most moles where licensing regulations allow. Please note that Elliemay’s requires written approval from your doctor.

Why do people choose electrolysis?

Elliemay’s, we’ve found most of our customers prefer to eliminate the constant maintenance of temporary hair removal. Maintenance can be costly over time. Also, if clients use temporary solutions, specifically shaving, this only enhances hair growth and coarseness of hair. Electrolysis helps our clients to save time and money over the long-term while enjoying the confidence and convenience that comes with unwanted hair removal.

Are all electrolysis treatments the same?

While all forms of electrolysis deliver the same results, safe and effective hair removal, there are actually three different treatment:

  • Galvanic electrolysis. This is a chemical process, which produces a chemical reaction in the hair follicle to eliminate hair growth cells.
  • Thermolysis, or “short-wave,” heats and destroys hair growth cells in the follicle. This modality will either apply a higher intensity current with less time in the follicle a lower intensity with more time in the follicle.
  • The Blend method combines both modalities above.

Are there side effects on the skin?

Perhaps, but only temporarily. Immediately after treatment, you may experience redness or tenderness. This varies with each individual. Over the years, electrolysis technology has evolved greatly, making treatment more comfortable and effective than ever. Elliemay is a skilled practitioner so our treatment poses very little risk of complication or serious skin irritation. After treatment, we will provide you with post-treatment instructions and any personal attention you need. We do suggest for the first 24 hours after your electrolysis session, that you avoid activity that might irritate hair follicles, this includes excessive sweating, tanning, prolonged sun exposure or wearing make-up.

Can pregnant women receive electrolysis treatments?

Perhaps. At Elliemay’s, we are aware unwanted hair can result from hormonal changes brought on by pregnancy. While we can still perform electrolysis on any normal skin, we strongly advise you to seek the advice your doctor’s advice before coming to us for treatment.

Can Elliemay’s remove all of my hair with one treatment?

The number of treatments depends on the amount of hair you wish to be removed as well as the texture. Excessive hair growth, also known as “hirsutism,” ranges from fine to coarse hair. If your hair is very course, breaking down the growth cells may require more than one treatment. During your initial consultation with us, we will design a treatment plan just for you.
